The eco-shortfall: UK businesses short of plans on carbon and renewables

Research commissioned by Ivalua and conducted by Coleman Parkes surveyed 303 UK procurement decision makers at companies with more than 1,000 employees and revenues above £50 million. It found a wide gap between stated sustainability ambition and the plans in place to deliver it.

Almost all respondents, 94%, expected sustainability-led innovation to be a priority over the following twelve months. Fewer than a quarter had comprehensive, fully implemented plans and KPIs for improving the sustainability of goods and services. On carbon emissions the figure was 21%, on circular economy principles 22%, on e-waste 20% and on renewable energy 18%.

The barriers were largely relational rather than technical. Respondents cited limited understanding of supplier innovation capability, no visibility beyond tier one into tier two and three suppliers, and poor data quality. The finding that has aged well is that a commitment made at group level fails at the point where it depends on suppliers the company cannot see.
